For a small chip on a front tooth, bonding is usually the answer. It is done in one visit with little or no drilling. A veneer fits a large chip, a repeat repair, or a change of color and shape. Here is how we decide at Pearl32 Dentistry and Wellness in Laguna Hills.
This is part of the cosmetic dentistry we offer at Pearl32 Dentistry and Wellness in Laguna Hills.
First, how big is the chip, and where?
Three things get checked before anything is proposed.
Size. A corner chip a couple of millimeters across behaves very differently from a tooth that has lost a third of its length.
Depth. Enamel only, into the dentin underneath, or close to the nerve. A chip into dentin is often sensitive to cold and needs covering soon. A deep fracture that reaches the nerve can mean a root canal before any cosmetic repair, and we would rather tell you that on day one.
Cause. A fall or a hard bite is one thing. A chip on a tooth that already shows wear across its edge points to grinding. A repair on a grinding tooth fails unless a night guard is part of the plan, so we say so before anything is started.
When bonding is the right answer
Bonding suits a chip up to roughly a third of the edge, on a tooth that is otherwise sound and a good color. The surface is cleaned and lightly etched. Resin is layered on in a shade matched to the wet tooth, then shaped, cured with a light and polished. Most cases need no drilling and no anesthetic. Allow 30 to 60 minutes. You leave with the tooth repaired.
Resin is polished rather than glazed, so it slowly picks up stain at the edges from coffee, tea and red wine. It can chip again on a hard bite. Both are fixed in the chair: a polish every year or two, and a repair if it chips. Four to eight years is typical before it is refreshed or replaced. Our cosmetic bonding page has the full picture.
When a veneer makes more sense
A porcelain veneer is a thin ceramic shell made outside the mouth and bonded to the front of the tooth. It comes into the decision when the chip is large, when a previous repair has failed more than once, when the tooth is darker than its neighbors, or when you want to change the shape as well as fix the corner.
Porcelain is glazed, so it holds its color and shine for years. Ten to fifteen years is a common range. The cost to the tooth is a few tenths of a millimeter of enamel across its front, removed to make room for the ceramic. That enamel does not grow back, so a veneered tooth will always need a veneer or a crown. This is why nothing is prepared until you have seen a trial smile on your own tooth and approved it. Veneers take two or three visits over two to four weeks. Our porcelain veneers page covers preparation and the trial smile in detail.
One tooth or several?
A single veneer on a front tooth is one of the harder matches in cosmetic dentistry, because it has to disappear next to a natural neighbor. It is done, and it is done well, but shade matching takes care and sometimes a second try-in. Bonding on one tooth is easier to match, because the resin is shaded in the mouth against the tooth itself.
If several front teeth are chipped or worn, the decision changes. Veneers across the front teeth give an even result that bonding struggles to match. Our smile makeover page explains how that is planned, and how the same digital scanner we use for implant planning designs the trial smile.
Whiten first, or repair first?
Whitening changes natural enamel only. Resin and porcelain do not lighten. So if you want a whiter smile as well as a repaired tooth, we whiten first, wait about two weeks for the shade to settle, then match the bonding or the veneer to the new color. Do it the other way round and the repaired tooth ends up darker than its neighbors. Our teeth whitening page compares the options, including KoR whitening.
How we decide with you at our Laguna Hills office
At the consultation we photograph the tooth, check the bite and how much enamel is left, and test whether the tooth is sensitive. For bonding we can often show the change the same day. For a veneer you see a trial smile before any enamel is touched.
Bonding costs less per tooth and is done in one visit. A veneer costs more and takes two or three visits, but lasts longer before it needs work. Both are quoted per tooth, itemized and in writing, after an examination. Third party financing is available and the practice is not the creditor. Details are on our financing page.
Questions people ask
Can a chipped front tooth be fixed in one visit?
Usually, yes, with bonding. The resin is shaped and hardened on the tooth in 30 to 60 minutes and you leave with the repair done. A veneer takes two or three visits because the porcelain is made outside the mouth.
Will the repair match my tooth?
Bonding is shaded against the wet tooth in daylight-balanced light, so a small repair usually disappears. A single porcelain veneer is harder to match to a natural neighbor and may need a second try-in. Whitening comes first if you want a lighter shade overall.
Does a chipped tooth need a root canal?
Only if the fracture has reached the nerve, or the nerve has died from the injury. Sensitivity to cold that fades quickly usually means exposed dentin, which bonding covers. Lingering pain, pain on biting or a tooth turning gray need an examination and an x-ray first.
Is bonding or a veneer better for a chipped tooth?
Neither is better for every chip. Bonding is quicker, costs less per tooth and removes little or no enamel, and is refreshed every four to eight years. A veneer lasts longer and can change color and shape, at the cost of enamel that does not grow back.
Does fixing a chipped front tooth hurt?
Bonding a small chip usually needs no drilling and no anesthetic. If the chip has reached the dentin, the tooth may be sensitive to cold. Then we numb the area first. You feel pressure while the resin is shaped, not sharp pain. A veneer removes a few tenths of a millimeter of enamel across the front of the tooth. That happens over two or three visits. The tooth may feel odd for a day afterward.
What does it cost to fix a chipped front tooth?
Both options are quoted per tooth, itemized and in writing, after an examination. Bonding costs less per tooth and is done in one visit. A veneer costs more and takes two or three visits, but lasts longer before it needs work. Some plans contribute toward bonding when it repairs a broken tooth. Third-party financing is available through outside lenders. The practice is not the creditor.
Do I need a night guard after the repair?
Yes, if the chip came from grinding. A chip on a tooth that already shows wear across its edge points to grinding. A single hard bite looks different. A repair on a grinding tooth fails unless a night guard is part of the plan. We say so before anything is started. That applies to bonding and to a veneer. If the chip came from a fall or a hard bite, no guard is needed.
How do I look after a repaired front tooth?
Brush and floss as normal. Avoid biting nails, pens and ice with the repaired tooth. A hard bite can chip resin again. Coffee, tea and red wine slowly stain the edges of bonding. A polish every year or two lifts most of it. Porcelain is glazed and holds its color and shine for years. A small chip in resin is repaired in the chair at a recall visit.
This article is general information, not a diagnosis. What is right for you can only be decided after an examination.
