What a porcelain veneer is, and what it is not

A veneer is a thin layer of ceramic bonded to the front surface of a tooth, almost always an upper front tooth. It changes color, length, shape, the width of a gap and the way alignment reads to the eye. It bonds to enamel, and that bond holds it on.

A veneer is not a crown: a crown wraps the whole tooth, a veneer covers the front and a little of the biting edge. It is also not a treatment for disease. Ceramic bonded over an untreated cavity, a dying nerve or inflamed gums hides the problem behind a cosmetic layer, so those come first.

They suit adults with sound teeth and gums who dislike the color, shape, edge wear, chips or spacing of their upper front teeth. When veneers are the wrong answer

A veneer is the right tool for some problems and an expensive detour for others.

Porcelain is made outside the mouth, then bonded on. It usually needs a measured amount of enamel removed to make room, so the decision is harder to walk back. Glazed ceramic does not take up stain the way resin does, and it cannot be patched the way resin can: a chipped veneer is normally remade.
