KoR whitening is a professional system combining custom sealed trays worn overnight at home with in-office sessions and refrigerated peroxide gel. Pearl32 Dentistry and Wellness in Laguna Hills uses it for adults whose staining has not responded to over the counter products. It does not change the color of existing crowns, veneers, fillings or bonding.

What KoR whitening does, and who gets a result from it

KoR is sometimes called deep bleaching, which describes the protocol rather than a different chemistry. The active ingredient is still peroxide. What differs is the concentration used at each stage, how long the gel stays against the tooth, and how the gel is stored before it reaches you.

Whitening works on natural tooth structure. Peroxide passes through enamel into the dentine and breaks down pigment laid down over years of coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco and ageing. Enamel also thins while dentine darkens, which is why teeth bright at twenty look different at fifty.

It suits adults whose teeth and gums are sound and whose color is what bothers them, and it is a sensible place to begin before any cosmetic work, because it removes no tooth structure. It sits within cosmetic dentistry and is often the first stage of a smile makeover. Decay and gum inflammation are treated first.

How the sealed trays and refrigerated gel differ from a supermarket kit

Most people arrive having tried strips or a pharmacy kit and been disappointed. The difference is mechanical, not magical, and a poor result at home is worth a second look.

  • The seal. Trays are made from a digital scan and trimmed to sit against the tooth at the gum margin, holding gel on and keeping saliva out, because saliva dilutes and neutralises peroxide. Strips and stock trays do not seal, so the gel is watered down as you wear it.
  • Contact time. Sealed trays are designed for overnight wear, against the half hour a strip stays on. How long active peroxide sits on the tooth matters as much as its strength.
  • Gel handling. Peroxide degrades at room temperature. KoR gel is kept refrigerated through manufacture, shipping and storage, and you keep your syringes in the fridge. A tube that sat on a warm shelf for months holds less active peroxide than its label says.

What whitening cannot change

This is the part people are rarely told.

Peroxide whitens natural tooth structure only. It does not change the color of crowns, veneers, fillings, bonding or bridgework. Whiten the teeth around a crown or a white filling and that restoration stays exactly the shade it is, reading darker against your new color. Matching it means replacing it.

So a crown on a front tooth, bonding on an edge, or a filling that shows when you smile will stand out rather than blend in. Plan the order instead: whiten first, let the shade settle, then remake the restoration to match. The other way means paying twice. New work is quoted separately, whether a same-day crown or a porcelain veneer.

Whitening also does not fix:

  • White spots from fluorosis or decalcification, which can look more obvious before blending back in.
  • A dark tooth after root canal treatment, where the stain sits inside. Internal bleaching or a crown is the route.
  • Worn biting edges that look dark because you are seeing dentine through thinned enamel. That is shape, not color.

Tetracycline staining

Tetracycline antibiotics taken while teeth were forming, in childhood or by a mother during pregnancy, bind into the dentine. The discolouration is gray, brown or banded, and sits inside the tooth. People who have it have usually been told for years that nothing can be done.

That is not quite right, though the honest answer is not a simple yes. These cases sometimes respond to an extended protocol run over many months, with nightly wear continuing far longer than usual. Banding can lighten and even out, or stop short of what you hoped, and there is no way to know which at the outset.

We can tell you what we see by three months, but not a final shade at the first visit. If it does not shift far enough, porcelain veneers are the alternative, and whitening first usually means thinner veneers.

How the course runs at our Laguna Hills office

Pearl32 Dentistry and Wellness has three general dentists. Dr. Nojan Jahedmanesh holds a dental degree from Loma Linda University and a certificate in prosthodontics from UCLA. He practices as a general dentist.

  • 1. Examination and cause. Teeth, gums and the starting shade photographed in consistent light. Surface stain, internal stain, an ageing restoration and tetracycline banding are different problems.
  • 2. Clinical work first. Decay, failing fillings and gum inflammation treated before gel goes near them. See general dentistry.
  • 3. A clean, so the gel works on the tooth, not the film over it.
  • 4. Digital scan and trays. A digital intraoral scan, with nothing setting in your mouth, then trays made to seal at the gum margin.
  • 5. Conditioning at home. Overnight tray wear with the home gel before you come in. This does much of the work and shows how sensitive you are.
  • 6. In-office session. Gums isolated, a stronger gel in timed cycles, desensitiser afterwards.
  • 7. Home phase continues, to even the shade across the arch.
  • 8. Review. We photograph in the same light as the start, record the shade and agree a maintenance interval. Keep your trays.

Sensitivity, and how it is managed

Sensitivity is the common side effect of peroxide whitening and you should expect some: short sharp twinges that pass in seconds, cold sensitivity for a day or two after a session, and sometimes sore gums where gel has touched them. It usually settles once whitening ends.

How much you get is not predictable: receding gums, exposed roots, cracks and worn edges all make it more likely. We check the gums and tray fit as you go, use a desensitising agent containing potassium nitrate and fluoride, and shorten or pause wear when sensitivity builds. Pausing does not undo progress, so tell us early rather than pushing through.

What professional teeth whitening costs

KoR is quoted as a course rather than per visit. The itemized estimate comes in writing before anything begins.

Included: the examination and shade records, the digital scan, your custom trays, the home gel, the in-office session with its desensitising protocol, and the review.

Not included, quoted separately in writing: dentistry needed beforehand such as fillings, gum treatment or a hygiene appointment; the extended tetracycline protocol; remaking restorations to match your new shade; and maintenance gel later.

Insurance does not normally contribute, because whitening counts as cosmetic. We accept most major PPO plans and Delta Dental HMO, larger cosmetic cases are often financed through Cherry, CareCredit, Sunbit or Happen Bank, subject to credit approval and explained on our financing page, and our membership plans cover routine care.

How long it takes, and how long it lasts

Ordinary staining usually takes four to eight weeks from first consultation, across three or four visits: the examination and scan, a couple of weeks of nightly tray wear, the in-office session, a further stretch of home wear and a review.

Add time when something comes first. A hygiene appointment or a few fillings can add a week or two, and deep internal staining runs on a different scale, commonly several months. New crowns or veneers are made about two weeks after whitening ends.

Then it fades. Coffee, tea, red wine, cola, dark sauces and tobacco all stain, and enamel keeps thinning while dentine darkens with age, so whitening is a result you maintain rather than one you finish. Because you keep your trays, refreshing usually means a short run of nightly gel rather than repeating the course, which many people do once or twice a year. Rinsing after staining drinks, keeping hygiene visits and not smoking slow the fade.

We see patients in Laguna Hills and neighboring Laguna Woods; hours are on the contact page.

Common questions about KoR teeth whitening

Does KoR whitening work?

It works on natural tooth structure, and how far it goes depends on what is causing your staining. Age-related yellowing and stain from coffee, tea, wine and tobacco typically respond; deep internal staining responds slowly. Nothing whitens a crown, veneer or filling.

How much does professional teeth whitening cost?

It is quoted as a course, covering the records, digital scan, custom trays, home gel, the in-office session and the review. You receive a written, itemized estimate first. Tetracycline protocols cost more, because they run for months.

Will whitening change the color of my crowns and fillings?

No. Peroxide lightens only natural tooth structure. Crowns, veneers, fillings, bonding and bridges stay the shade they are, so afterwards they read darker against the teeth around them. Whiten first, let the shade settle, then have the restoration remade to match.

How many shades whiter will my teeth get?

We will not put a number on it. That depends on the cause of your staining, your enamel and how consistently you wear the trays, and anyone quoting a fixed number of shades in advance is guessing. We record your shade and review the change.

Does teeth whitening hurt?

Expect some. Short sharp twinges that pass in seconds, cold sensitivity for a day or two after a session, and sometimes sore gums. It is usually temporary, and we shorten or pause wear when it builds.

Can tetracycline stained teeth be whitened?

Sometimes, with an extended protocol run over months rather than weeks. The stain is bound into the dentine, so it responds slowly and unevenly. Some cases lighten a great deal, others stop short. If it does not shift far enough, veneers are the alternative.

How long does KoR whitening last?

It fades gradually rather than disappearing, and how fast depends mostly on diet and smoking. Because you keep your custom trays, most people maintain the result with a short run of nightly gel once or twice a year, not by repeating the course.

Should I whiten before getting veneers?

Usually yes. Porcelain cannot be whitened afterwards, so your natural shade sets the reference point for the new work. Whitening first, then letting the shade settle about two weeks, means the veneers match the color you want, and can mean thinner veneers.

A whitening consultation at Pearl32 Dentistry and Wellness starts with what is causing the color, because that decides whether gel is the answer. In practice here since 1994.
