Candid Pro and Invisalign move teeth the same way: a sequence of clear trays made from a digital scan, each a little ahead of where your teeth sit, changed every one to two weeks and worn 20 to 22 hours a day. Our comparison page sets out how the two systems differ in supervision, materials and software. This article is about the part that page does not cover: what the months of treatment are actually like, where the two systems feel different from the chair, and the small daily habits that decide whether the trays work. Pearl32 Dentistry and Wellness in Laguna Hills mostly uses Candid Pro, and the dentist explains after your scan why one system or the other fits your case.
The part that is identical
Whichever name is on the box, the routine is the same. A tray goes in, presses lightly on particular teeth, and stays in for all but two to four hours a day. After one to two weeks you move to the next tray. Small tooth-colored bumps called attachments may be bonded to some teeth so the tray has something to grip, and elastics are added if your bite needs them. Mild cases can finish in a few months; more complex ones take a year or more. When the last tray is done, you move on to retainers, with either brand. Our clear aligners page explains how the movement works and who is a candidate.
Where the two systems part ways for you
The practical difference is the calendar. With Candid Pro, your dentist prescribes and supervises the treatment, orthodontists on the Candid side review every plan before the trays are made, and progress between visits is monitored remotely: a small scanning attachment on your phone takes pictures every week or two, the scans are checked, and you come into the office less often. With Invisalign, your dentist plans the case in Align’s ClinCheck software and Align Technology makes the trays from its SmartTrack material. Invisalign practices usually hold regular in-person checkups, and some add Align’s own remote monitoring.
Neither rhythm is better for everyone. Someone who commutes or travels for work tends to prefer fewer visits. Someone who wants a dentist to look in their mouth every few weeks, and who finds the phone scanning a chore, may prefer the in-person cadence. Both treat the same range of problems, and the choice is about workflow and fit for your case, not about one brand winning. Most patients here get Candid Pro; when Invisalign fits a case better the dentist says so and explains why.
The first week
Each new tray feels tight, and the teeth it is moving are tender for a day or two. You notice it most when you bite, which matches the research: in a randomized trial comparing aligners with braces, patients reported clearly more discomfort while chewing than at rest. Over-the-counter pain relief covers it for most people, and starting a new tray at bedtime means you sleep through the tightest hours.
Your speech may sound different at first, particularly S sounds, because your tongue is finding new edges. A systematic review of seven studies found that most people adapt within one to two weeks, though a few take a month or more. If you have attachments, they feel rough against the inside of your lip at first; that settles too, and the trays cover them most of the day. If a tray edge is genuinely rubbing a sore spot rather than just feeling new, call the office and we smooth it; you do not have to wait for a scheduled visit.
The 22-hour arithmetic
Twenty to twenty-two hours a day sounds generous until you count. Breakfast, a coffee, lunch, a snack, a long dinner: each one is trays out, and the hours out add up faster than people expect. The American Association of Orthodontists is plain about it: avoid any drink that is not water while your aligners are in. Coffee and tea stain the plastic, anything sugary sits against your teeth under the tray, and hot drinks can soften it.
Wear less than that and the teeth fall behind the plan. The trays stop seating fully, and catching up can mean a rescan and extra aligners. So the habit that matters most is eating in fewer, longer windows rather than grazing. Take the trays out, eat, brush or at least rinse, and put them straight back in. Keep the case in your pocket or bag, not on a restaurant table, which is where trays get thrown away with the napkins.
This is the honest test before you start. If you know you will not manage the hours, say so at the consultation. Fixed braces work whether or not you remember anything, and for some people they are the more realistic route. Our orthodontics page covers that option.
Cleaning, travel and the lost tray
Rinse the trays every time they come out and brush them gently with a soft toothbrush and cool water once a day. Never hot water, which can damage the plastic. Brush and floss your own teeth before the trays go back in, because a tray holds whatever is on the tooth against it for hours.
When you travel, take the tray you are wearing, the previous one and the next one. If a tray cracks or goes missing, you can step back to the previous tray to hold position until you reach us, or move on to the next if the dentist says the teeth are ready. Call before you decide. Replacement trays are quoted separately, which is one more reason the case belongs in your pocket.
Refinements, and why they are normal
Partway through, or at the end of the series, some teeth will not have moved exactly as the plan drew them. That is the rule rather than the exception. Invisalign has the most published research of any aligner system, and in a 2020 study its tooth movements achieved, on average, about 50 percent of what the planning software predicted. In a 2023 study of Invisalign patients, only 6 percent finished without a single refinement scan.
It is not a failure. The plan is a projection built from your starting scan, and biology does not always follow the drawing. We rescan, a shorter series of trays is made to finish the movement, and the case runs on a little longer. Knowing this at the start makes the extra trays a step rather than a disappointment.
After the last tray
Any attachments are polished off, which takes a few minutes and no anesthetic. Then come the retainers: usually clear trays worn full time at first and then cut back to nights, sometimes with a fine wire bonded behind the lower front teeth. The American Association of Orthodontists notes that teeth are most prone to moving back in the settling-in period right after treatment, and that most people will need to wear retainers for the rest of their lives, whichever system moved the teeth. If a retainer cracks or stops fitting, call and it is replaced.
Whitening, if you want it, comes after the trays are done. Our teeth whitening page compares the options. The fee for aligner treatment is quoted in writing, itemized, after the examination and scan, and orthodontic coverage varies by plan, so bring your plan name and we check it before you come in. Our insurance page lists the plans we accept and our financing page covers the third party options.
Questions people ask
Will people notice I am wearing aligners?
Rarely. The trays are clear and any attachments are small and tooth-colored. Your speech may sound slightly different at first, mostly on S sounds; a review of seven studies found most people adapt within one to two weeks, and a few take longer.
Can I drink coffee with aligners in?
No. Only water goes in your mouth with the trays in. Coffee and tea stain the plastic, and hot drinks can soften it. Take the trays out, drink, rinse, and put them back. Each coffee counts toward your two to four hours out, which is why eating and drinking in fewer windows makes the 22-hour target reachable.
What happens if I lose a tray?
Call the office before you do anything. Depending on where you are in the sequence, you either step back to the previous tray to hold position or move on to the next one. Keep your previous tray for exactly this reason. Replacement trays are quoted separately.
Do I see the dentist less often with Candid Pro?
Often. Candid Pro includes remote monitoring with a phone-based scanning tool, so in-office visits can be fewer. Invisalign practices usually hold regular in-person checkups, and some add Align’s own remote monitoring. With either system you still come in for reviews of tracking and gum health, for attachments, and for refinements.
