A smile makeover is a plan, not a single procedure, and it combines whichever treatments your smile actually needs: whitening, clear aligners, bonding, veneers, crowns or implants. What a smile makeover means here, and who asks for one

“Smile makeover” is a description, not a treatment. It means ordinary dental treatments, chosen deliberately and carried out in the right order, to change how your smile looks.

That distinction matters, because the phrase gets used loosely. It sometimes means ten veneers. It can also mean one afternoon of whitening, four months of aligners, or a single bonded chip on one front tooth. A complete smile transformation is sometimes the right plan. Often it is more than the situation calls for.

This page is for the person who knows they are unhappy with their smile but cannot name the fix. That is normal, not a failure. Color, position, shape and proportion blur together in a mirror, and sorting them apart is our job. It is also for second opinions on a large veneer case quoted elsewhere. Enamel does not grow back, so it is worth being certain before anyone picks up a drill.

Why a makeover is planned as one unit, not a list of jobs

Any single tooth can be fixed on its own. A makeover is what you do when fixing them one at a time would leave you with a mouth that looks assembled rather than whole. Three things only become problems once several teeth are treated together, and all three get decided before anything is drilled.

Shade is chosen once, for everything

Porcelain does not respond to bleach. Neither does composite. Natural enamel does. That fixes the order: if you want a lighter mouth, the whitening happens first, the shade is left to settle for about two weeks, and only then is the porcelain matched to where your own teeth have actually landed. Done the other way around, the new work stops matching the teeth beside it within a month, and the only remedy is remaking it.

Proportion is a decision, not a default

Front teeth have a width to length ratio that reads as normal, and a row of teeth has a rhythm to it: the two central incisors dominate, the laterals step back slightly, the canines turn the corner. Replace one tooth and you copy its neighbor. Replace eight and you are choosing all of it. That is why a makeover is designed on models and shown to you as a mock-up before anything is made, and why veneers planned this way look different from veneers ordered one at a time.

The middle of your smile is not always the middle of your face

Three reference lines decide whether a smile reads as level: the midline, the edge line across the tips of the upper teeth, and how that edge line sits against your lower lip when you smile. All three are cheap to correct at the planning stage and expensive to correct afterwards. Where teeth are crowded or tipped, aligners usually move them into position first, because moving a tooth costs less than cutting a tooth down to fake the position.

The order is not negotiable

Gum health comes before anything cosmetic, because inflamed gums shrink back after treatment and take the margins of your new work with them. Missing teeth are addressed before the teeth around them are finished, since an implant changes what its neighbors have to carry. And where old dentistry is failing across the whole mouth, this is no longer cosmetic work: it becomes full mouth reconstruction, a different plan on a different budget.

How the planning works at our Laguna Hills office

We start by asking you to point at what bothers you, in a mirror, in your own words. Vague is fine. Nothing irreversible happens until you have seen a preview and approved it.

• Photographs and records. Clinical and facial photographs, a digital intraoral scan and x-rays. Scanning replaces the tray of impression material, and it is quicker. If implants or the bite are involved, we add a 3D cone beam CT scan.
• Health before aesthetics. Gum health, decay and bite are assessed first. Cosmetic work built on untreated gum disease or an unstable bite does not hold up, so anything found is treated before the plan starts.
• Digital smile planning. Photographs and scan are combined and the design is drawn on screen: tooth length and width, where the edges sit against your lip when you speak, the midline, and how the shapes relate to your face rather than a template.
• The trial smile. The design becomes a physical mock-up, placed over your teeth in a temporary material with no drilling. You see it in your own mouth, in daylight. You can speak, photograph it, and say what to change: longer, shorter, squarer, softer.
• Your approval. We do not prepare a tooth until you have seen the trial smile and agreed to it. If it is not right, we redesign and show you again.

What a smile makeover costs

A makeover is priced as the sum of its parts, itemized, not as a package with one headline number. Two people asking for a smile makeover can need completely different work.

Each component is quoted on its own line: whitening, clear aligner treatment, composite bonding per tooth, a porcelain veneer per tooth, a crown, and a single implant with its crown.

You get an itemized estimate in writing before anything begins. It lists every tooth and procedure, so you can see what you are paying for and remove what you do not want. Records, photographs, digital smile planning, the trial smile, temporaries and reviews are included in the fees. Gum treatment, root canals, extractions and a night guard are quoted separately. Treatment can be staged over months or years.

Most cosmetic treatment is not covered by dental insurance, though individual components sometimes are, such as a crown on a broken tooth. We accept most major PPO plans and Delta Dental HMO and will check your benefits first. How long a smile makeover takes

How long it takes depends on the route.

• Whitening only: usually 2 to 4 weeks.
• Bonding on a few front teeth: usually 1 to 3 weeks, the bonding itself typically one appointment.
• Porcelain veneers or crowns: usually 4 to 8 weeks from records to fitting, allowing for design, the trial smile and changes.
• Clear aligners: usually 4 to 12 months of movement, then whitening and reshaping.
• Implants: usually 4 to 9 months, because healing between placement and the final crown cannot be hurried.
• Full mouth reconstruction: usually 6 to 18 months, in planned stages.

Will my veneers still match if I whiten later?

No, and this is why sequence matters. Whitening gel changes natural enamel but not porcelain or composite, so restorations placed before whitening will no longer match afterwards. We whiten first, let the shade settle, then choose the shade of any new work. Changing existing restorations later means remaking them.

How long do the results last?

It varies by treatment and by how you look after it. Whitening fades gradually and is usually refreshed. Bonding stains and chips over time and is typically repaired every few years. Porcelain veneers and crowns can also chip or debond, and any restoration eventually needs replacing.

I do not like my smile but cannot say why. Can you help?
