Dental Implant or Bridge: Which Fits

A dental implant replaces one missing tooth with its own root, so the teeth either side are left alone. A bridge replaces it by crowning those two neighbors and hanging a false tooth between them. The short answer

If the two teeth next to the gap are healthy and there is enough bone, an implant usually makes more sense, because nothing sound is cut down. If those teeth already need crowns, or surgery is off the table for you, a bridge is the sensible choice and is done in weeks. Leaving the gap is sometimes reasonable too, and we will say so.

What each one actually is

The implant

A titanium fixture goes into the jawbone where the root used to be. Bone grows onto it over three to six months. An abutment then connects it to a crown. You clean around it much like a natural tooth. Full detail is on our single dental implants page.

The bridge

A three unit bridge is one piece: a crown on each neighboring tooth with a false tooth fixed between them. The two neighbors are shaped for their crowns, the bridge is made, then cemented. It is finished over two or three visits across a few weeks, with no surgery.

The teeth next to the gap

This is the deciding factor more often than bone. Two healthy neighbors argue for an implant, because a bridge would grind them down for no reason of their own. Two teeth that already carry large fillings or old crowns argue for a bridge, because they need crowning anyway.

Bone at the site

An implant needs enough bone to hold the fixture in the right position. The 3D cone beam scan measures it in millimeters. Small shortfalls are grafted at placement. Larger ones mean a graft first and three to six months of healing, or a bridge instead.

Your health and medications

Uncontrolled diabetes, heavy smoking and intravenous bone medicines all work against implant healing. Radiotherapy to the jaws is a serious caution. None of these stop a bridge.

Time

A bridge is finished in weeks. A single implant takes 16 to 28 weeks with enough bone, and nine to twelve months if a graft or an extraction comes first. If the gap is at the front, a temporary tooth covers it while an implant heals.

Cleaning

An implant crown is brushed and flossed like a tooth. A bridge has a false tooth with gum beneath it, so cleaning under it needs a floss threader or a water flosser every day. Skipping that is how bridges are lost.

Where each one falls short

An implant is surgery. It needs months, it needs bone, and it needs healing that some conditions and medications slow. If the fixture does not integrate, it is removed and the site is grafted and tried again later.

A bridge costs two teeth their enamel. If one of those teeth later cracks or decays under its crown, the whole bridge usually comes out with it. The bone under the false tooth keeps shrinking because nothing loads it, so a gap can open under the bridge over the years.

Is a dental implant better than a bridge?

Neither is better in every case. An implant stands on its own, leaves the neighboring teeth alone and keeps loading the bone. A bridge is finished in weeks with no surgery. The condition of the two teeth next to the gap, the bone at the site and your health decide it.

Which lasts longer, an implant or a bridge?

No dentist can promise a lifespan. An implant fixture that integrates and is cleaned daily often serves for decades, though the crown on top may be replaced after ten to fifteen years. A three unit bridge typically lasts ten to fifteen years, and when one part fails all three units usually come off together.

Does a bridge damage the teeth next to the gap?

Yes. Both neighboring teeth are reduced all the way around to carry crowns, and that enamel does not come back. When those teeth already have large fillings or old crowns, nothing is lost. When they are healthy, that reduction is the real cost of a bridge.

Can I have a bridge if I do not have enough bone for an implant?

What happens if I do nothing about the gap?

The teeth either side tip and drift into the space, food packs into the new contacts, and the tooth opposite over-erupts because nothing meets it. The ridge shrinks fastest in the first year. A rear molar with nothing biting against it can sometimes be left alone, and we will tell you if that is your case.
